The Christian faith is concerned with every area of life beginning with relationship with God, and extending to relationship with others, marriage, family, life style, world view, work, play, love, human sexuality, physical and mental wellbeing, the care of the poor, the outcast, the dispossessed, the oppressed, the demon possessed, the broken, the hurting, the lonely, and the lost. It is truly the ultimate recovery movement; restoring individuals, homes, churches, neighborhoods, communities and nations.
Unlike some recovery and twelve step groups which focus almost exclusively on one area of addiction or bondage, the Christian faith is about recovering the whole person. God doesn’t want us simply to overcome an addiction to alcohol, or over eating, or gambling, or pornography, but that every area of our lives be claimed and transformed by Christ’s presence in us. Anger, jealousy, hatred, bitterness, unforgiveness, a critical spirit, apathy toward others, greed, lust, and pride; all these we can and must be delivered from. The moment we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit begins reshaping us and recovering in us the image of God. That means every Christ follower is in recovery if we are walking with Christ and allowing his Word to form us. |
